Who is EJ?

EJ Portrait
My name is EJ, and I’m a Black visual artist studying at the University of Guelph. Anime has been one of my biggest sources of inspiration for as long as I can remember, not just for its unique style, but for the way it tells stories about struggle, identity, hope, and resilience. I’ve always been drawn to how anime characters face obstacles that mirror real-world experiences, and I use that connection as the foundation of my work. In my art, I don’t just recreate characters—I reinterpret themes, archetypes, and aesthetics from anime to reflect real-life social issues. I create pieces that explore topics like identity, representation, mental health, inequality, and the experiences of Black and marginalized communities. By merging anime influences with the realities of everyday life, I aim to tell stories that people can feel, relate to, and think about.

My style blends traditional and digital techniques, pulling elements from both realism and anime. I use symbolism, character design, and visual storytelling to start conversations and challenge perspectives. For me, anime isn’t an escape from reality—it’s a language I use to express it. Studying at the University of Guelph has given me the space to continue developing my craft and artistic voice. My goal is to create work that resonates with fans of anime while also speaking to wider human experiences. I want my art to spark reflection, create connection, and turn imagination into a tool for social awareness and change.
